Developments in micromechanical modelling of granular materials

چکیده
We are honouring the memory of Ioannis Vardoulakis through this special issue of Granular Matter, which is devoted to developments in micromechanical modelling of granular materials. Ioannis Vardoulakis will be forever remembered as an innovative experimentalist, a brilliantmechanician, an enthusiastic scientist, a devoted teacher, and above all an exceptional human being. The impression he made on those fortunate enough to meet him was indelible. These qualities are encapsulated in the first article, Gerd Gudehus’ “in memoriam” [1]: a thoughtful and comprehensive account of the exceptional career of Ioannis Vardoulakis, and his unique approach to rational geomechanics. To showcase the breadth and depth of Vardoulakis’ scientific contributions, and the influence these have had on current thinking and innovations in the science of granular media, we have organised the remaining fifteen articles into five groups, each unified by a particular theme.

Non-Coaxial Theories of Plasticity for Granular Materials
This Keynote Paper is concerned with the fundamental mechanics of granular materials with a particular reference to non-coaxial behaviour. The non-coaxial behaviour refers to the non-coincidence of principal stress directions and corresponding principal plastic strain rate directions during plastic deformation. At present, the majority of soil models used in geotechnical practice are those of a...

A micromechanical study is made of the relationship between interparticle friction coefficient and macroscopic continuum friction and dissipation in idealised granular materials, using Discrete Element Method simulations with varying . As expected, macroscopic friction and dilatancy increase with . Surprisingly, dissipation is present even when or when . Hence, dissipation in idealised granular...
متن کاملDiscrete Element Modelling Of Cohesionless, Cohesive And Bonded Granular Materials - From Model Conceptualisations To Industrial Scale Applications
Handling and processing of bulk granular materials is of major importance in many industries including agriculture, chemical, food, pharmaceutical, construction and mining. In recent decades, the Discrete Element Method (DEM) is increasingly adopted for studying the complex behaviour of granular materials and simulating the industrial processes in many applications. DEM computes at individual p...

In this study, we offer a general view at the area of fuzzy modeling and fuzzymodels, identify the visible development phases and elaborate on a new and promisingdirections of system modeling by introducing a concept of granular models. Granularmodels, especially granular fuzzy models constitute an important generalization of existingfuzzy models and, in contrast to the existing models, generat...
متن کاملThe incremental response of soils. An investigation using a discrete-element model
The incremental stress-strain relation of dense packings of polygons is investigated by using moleculardynamics simulations. The comparison of the simulation results to the continuous theories is performed using explicit expressions for the averaged stress and strain over a representative volume element. The discussion of the incremental response raises two important questions of soil deformati...
